A big thanks to the Marching Band class of 2013, we couldn’t have done it without you guys! Here’s to the future!
Special thanks to all the underclassmen and everyone who made this senior tribute night possible
Humbled. Seeing pictures from Senior Tribute and reminiscing about band here in college with Stephen, we laughed about how much I cried this very night one year ago (crazy that it’s already been that long, but that’s beside the point). As I thought back to try and remember just why the tears flowed so hard that night, I could only remember how humbling my last season of marching band was.
Senior year, I was completely overwhelmed by the amount of love the band showed me and even more by the amount of trust they had in me. As I recall reflecting on during my speech that night, my first three years of band were all fun and games, many times at the expense of others’ feelings or of the good of the band as a whole. So when senior year came around, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I certainly did not expect the warm welcome I received. No one was obligated to treat me with such love and respect, so why would they? Nevertheless, the faith that was put in me last year speaks volumes as to what kind of organization the Apache Marching Band and Color Guard is and the kind growth and development it enables.
“We’re only as strong as our weakest member.”
I remember watching a certain trailer for a certain documentary that has yet to be released (LOL I’m just playing, JC), and wishing I could take back that one line. Because after my fourth and final season as a part of this amazing organization, I finally realized that what band had been teaching me all this time is exactly the opposite of that statement. “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts” (Aristotle). If I could go back and change one thing, I’d make that switch in a heartbeat, because it really is true. In band we learned that on our own, we’re really not that great, but together, we can achieve amazing and beautiful things.
Congratulations if you’ve managed to read this far, cause I know this is rather long winded LOL. I know I don’t really use tumblr very often, but with all the thoughts and feelings running through my head tonight, I needed to find an outlet for all this love <3.
God, thank you for putting together all the incredible pieces of my journey thus far, and for placing me in a home and a hometown that has facilitated in me so much growth and development beyond what words can express.
Arcadia, you have taught me so many amazing things and introduced me to so many amazing people that have changed my life, and I am forever grateful.
Last but not least, on the night of (I guess the morning after, now) Senior Tribute, to the Class of 2013: I know a lot of you look up to me much more than you should, but your faith in me means the world. I am so incredibly proud of every single one of you, and it has been awesome being able to watch you guys grow and develop into the strong and mature (debatable, but who am I to judge that?! <3) men and women you are today. Seriously, cherish the time you have left in band, and the rest of your senior year, because it goes by way too quickly and before you know it, you’ll be in disbelief when you hear about Senior Tribute happening next year. Even more importantly, cherish all the lessons learned and friendships made in marching band, because you may never experience something quite like this, ever again. Once again, congratulations on a job very well done (almost done, that is) and an amazing season, and for keeping up the *cliche alert* “Tradition of Excellence.”
